A Selfless Act

The way you can measure a society’s soul is by the way that it treats its children.

I’m back! The reason for going to Thailand is that my niece, Belynda Seale (alias Bim) got married to Rob Stewart in Chiang Mai on the 30th October. I mention this because I dedicated my first book to her (check out the dedication page in the yellow book). Some of you may know Bim and Rob and I know would wish them well.

A Selfless Act

I get tired of people telling me about how badly behaved children are today (compared with when?), how selfish they are ‘ blah, blah, blah ‘ and so I thought I’d share with you an article from the latest Cancer Council WA newsletter as it struck a chord with me, and hopefully it will with you too.

’12 Year Old Gives Up Birthday Gifts To Help Those Fighting Cancer!

When it comes to birthday parties, most kids are thinking about the type of cake they want, where to have the party and who to invite.

But remarkably one young man had something very different on his mind. He was trying to figure out which charity he could ask his friends to donate to instead of giving him a present.

When Bevan asked his very surprised Mum for ideas of who he could donate to, she had loads of suggestions. When she mentioned the Cancer Council WA he asked who they help and she replied that they help everyone who needs it.

Bevan agreed this was the charity he wanted to give to because they didn’t just help kids or just adults, but ‘everyone, so the money we give them can help more people.’

Nearly 40 youngsters attended Bevan’s birthday party and showed great support for his idea, raising a fantastic $351 and maybe even starting a new trend among the kids at his school!

Bevan is a really inspiring young man with a very generous heart, and his selflessness (along with the support of his friends) will mean so much to those affected by cancer.’

I hope you will share this story with the children you care for, not by way of making them feel guilty or to shame them into doing likewise, but simply to demonstrate a certain way of thinking and acting that may not have occurred to them before. There is no mention in the article about Bevan’s school or where he lives, but I bet wherever it is, he has been brought up in a loving and supportive atmosphere, both at school and at home. Your children will respond to this as they see fit. Whether you see the results immediately or not is irrelevant. The point is, they will have been affected by its message.

Quotes of the Week

The children now love luxury; they have bad manners, contempt for authority; they show disrespect for elders and love chatter in place of exercise. Children are now tyrants, not the servants of their households. They no longer rise when elders enter the room. They contradict their parents, chatter before company, gobble up dainties at the table, cross their legs, and tyrannize their teachers.   Socrates 469-399 BC

Entertainment

Great truths adults have learned:

1) Raising teenagers is like nailing jelly to a tree.

2) Wrinkles don’t hurt.

3) Families are like fudge…mostly sweet, with a few nuts.

4) Today’s mighty oak is just yesterday’s nut that held its ground.

5) Laughing is good exercise. It’s like jogging on the inside.

6) Middle age is when you choose your cereal for the fibre, not the toy.

Feedback

The most useful thing I learnt was the art of storytelling. Great relaxation techniques ‘ stretches. Beautiful! So simplistic and effective. Vesma Upenieks, ECCPA Conference 2008

The most useful thing was the stretching exercises in order to relax and having a chat while lying on tummy to initiate relaxing body. Overall, it was beneficial with lots of ideas for relaxing body and music examples were especially helpful. Notes are very explicit.
